Jeans Trends

Jeans are an essential part of any wardrobe – hard wearing, comfortable and incredibly versatile, designers have worked hard over the years to create new twists on denim that keep them at fashion’s cutting edge more than a century after their invention. This year’s no different, and there is whole new range of cuts this year, guaranteed to keep your denim collection looking fresh.

Carrot cut – following on from the popularity of the harem pant cut that’s all over the high street right now, the carrot cut takes the harem cut and slims it right down. Slightly wide across the thighs, and then tapering in towards the ankle, this creates a far more flattering silhouette and a more versatile shape to wear than the harem. The tightness at the ankle makes these jeans great for showing off this season’s footwear too.

Straight leg – the skinny jean may be on the wane, but designers are sticking with slim silhouettes. The straight leg keeps legs looking slim and long and after the multitude of boot cuts, flares and skinny incarnations we’ve seen over the recent decade, is a nostalgic trip back to days when denim was simpler.

High waist – with the 70’s mum look being in right now, high-waisted jeans provide an instant way to create a 70’s look. Great for lengthening legs, these look great with a cropped tee or tucked in shirt. Be warned though, this shape doesn’t suit everybody and can accentuate the stomach and thighs, so try before you buy.

Acid wash – as well as new denim cuts, we’re seeing new trends when it comes to denim fabrics and finishes too. Jeans are moving away from blue shades and into blacks and greys. Faded black is particularly big news, and the continuing popularity of all things grunge means that acid wash denim is making a comeback.

Chino cut – the vintage travel theme that was all over the catwalks last year saw chinos make a major return to the high street. Perfect summer wear, denim designers have adopted this cut for their autumn season collections. Look out for chino cut jeans with ankle zip detailing that offer a new take on the classic chino cut.

Shopping for these new denim trends is easy. All are vintage cuts, so can be found at vintage and thrift stores, as well as designer jeanswear collections and well as high street stores like New Look that specialise in jeans collections.
